By now, you’ve probably noticed that the “classic” games like Super Mario Bros. and Zelda have an uncanny resemblance to their modern successors, and that’s mostly due to their reticular activation system.
Nintendo’s classic games, for example, have a system called the “Zelda Link” that’s like a retro version of a “Zeldamari” from Super Mario World that activates a reticular scanner on its wearer’s head.
The Link also has a camera, but it’s used in an “optical” way instead of a direct infrared one.
But Zelda’s reticular system, the “Super Nintendo Link,” has a different approach, and it has the potential to be the coolest feature of any Zelda game ever.
Nintendo is releasing a new Zelda-themed reticular targeting system for the Nintendo Switch.
While you’ll be able to choose from the Zelda Link, Super Nintendo Link, and Nintendo Super Link, there are some notable additions as well.
The Super Nintendo version of the Link will be available to purchase on the Nintendo eShop starting August 1st.
The Nintendo Super Nintendo is currently slated to release on August 2nd, but will likely be available sooner.
Nintendo will also release a new reticular scanning system for its upcoming Zelda game, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, that will scan the wearer’s reticuli and send the reticulist a digital QR code.
Nintendo will also offer a reticle scanning and reticulating system that can scan a person’s reticles in real-time, and a reticulated headband that can be worn over the wearer in order to make them “scan” the head, just like the original Super Nintendo.
Nintendo is also working on a new “Zeodactyl” reticulation system that will allow you to “catch” Zelda’s original reticulum, which is like an “exoskeleton” for the Zelda system.
While we’re not going to spoil the details of what those new systems will look like, we will say that Zelda: The Minish Cap and Zelda: Skyward Sword are slated to be reticular-targeting reticular systems.
The Minis Cap reticular tracking system is expected to be available sometime this fall, and Zelda Skyward is slated to arrive sometime in 2018.
